Today will be a very important date in Tarek’s trial, as the first cooperating witness (an FBI euphemism for informant/snitch) will be called upon by the prosecution to testify. Ali Aboubakr has chosen to collaborate with the FBI in their efforts to place Tarek behind bars for life. .
Evidently, a 20 year history of friendship with Tarek Mehanna has proved insufficient to deter Aboubakr from agreeing to provide testimony against a highly esteemed member of the Muslim community by collaborating with the FBI as an informant. Noteworthy, Aboubakr has served as president of the UMass Boston Muslim Student’s Association.
A very strong turnout of Tarek’s supporters is anticipated, as members of a number of different Massachusetts Islamic communities, including Ali’s native Sharon community, have expressed a keen interest in observing the day’s events. Given that Tarek’s defense team has successfully left 30+ year FBI veterans trembling following cross-examination, it will be interesting to observe how Ali fares following what is certain to be the defense’s in-depth scrutiny of his testimony.
